Touring South Luangwa National Park with Tracks4Africa GPS Maps

2014-04-19 It's been a few months since I smelt the fresh air of the Zambian bush. For Easter I decided to take my family to South Luangwa National Park, a place I have never visited before. I quickly loaded my car the night before we started the 10 hour journey. Once I had all the family in the car and ensured we had all the essentials for the weekend I turned on my Garmin Montana 650 GPS equipped with Tracks4Africa Maps. The GPS gave me the full route we were to travel to the bush camp including the arrival times that were all spot on. We spent the next few days driving on our own through the South Luangwa Park without any fear of taking a wrong track or getting lost. This was due to the fact that we had every detail of all the game viewing roads in the park including the points of interest such as scenic spots and view points all displayed on the Tracks4Africa Maps.

The Tracks4Africa Maps is a map that is specifically designed for outdoor enthusiasts traveling through Africa. It includes a lot of detail of all the important points of interests in towns and cities. It also has details of all the lodges and campsites and all the information that would be beneficial to those travelers like me that just love to be on and off-road exploring. Tracks4Africa Maps also has most of the rivers and lakes including river tracks where a boat could easily find its way through rocky or sandy parts of the rivers.

The Tracks4Africa Maps are available at the Autoworld Downtown branch in Lusaka along with a wide range of Garmin GPS units. If you love the outdoors and want to ensure you that you never miss the “bush highlights”, then visit Downtown and get yourself equipped for your next adventure…

If you've enjoyed this post and want to read about more of my 4x4 adventures, check out the Explore Zambia category within the news section on the Autoworld website.

Happy adventures!

Seasons Greetings from the Director

In our final newsletter of the year, one of our Directors here at Autoworld, Glenn Findlay, ends with some reflections on 2013 and wishes you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.  Please note that all of our branches will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day. Director - Glenn-1

As I sit here reflecting on the past year I can see how 2013 has been a year of many new developments and changes at Autoworld.

In December last year we launched our new website with our interactive news page bringing our customers the latest information and tips from our team at Autoworld.  We have embraced the world of social media with our new Facebook page and Twitter page and are really enjoying engaging with our customers in a new way. The response has been fantastic from this expansion into cyber space and we've really enjoyed getting feedback from both our customers and suppliers.  We're looking forward to continuing to develop this aspect of the business in 2014 and would love to hear any suggestions you may have of information you would like to receive from us.

February marked our first Monthly Special of our top selling items reduced for a period of one week starting on the first Thursday of each month.  Over the past year we've been able to offer a wide range of items and the feedback from our customers has been brilliant!

Our purchasing department are continuously striving to keep our product range fresh and meeting the needs of our customers, so the addition of our Ecogen and Eezi-Awn tents dealerships this year has been a great success.  We do our best to keep up to date with what's new on the market, however if you've seen something that you would like us to stock please feel free to drop us an email with your thoughts.

Internally our team have been receiving lots of product training thanks to our dedicated supplier network and we're looking forward to another year of working together to further improve our product knowledge.  Davies Malembeka has been doing a fantastic job in helping us define and implement our core values as a company ensuring that we are all working together as a team to keep Zambia moving.

This Christmas we've put together the Ultimate Christmas Shopping List for Him which really embraces our product range at Autoworld that is all about play.  You can find it below and with just 5 days left until Christmas you might still get lucky if you send the list in the right direction ;-)

On a final note, on behalf of the whole team at Autoworld, I'd like to wish all of our customers and suppliers a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.  It's thanks to your business and support that we've been able to have the year of change that we have and we look forward to another year of working together.

Merry Christmas! Glenn Findlay Director

Team Autoworld at the Elephant Charge 2013

The slogan of the Elephant Charge is “Dust, Sweat & Gears”, but for Team Autoworld it was "Dust, Sweat, Gears and Buffalo beans"!  Our skipper and team driver, David Findlay, shares the adventures of Team Autoworld at the Elephant Charge 2013 held last month in Zambia. Elephant charge-1

This year the Elephant Charge Rally was held approximately 100km out of Lusaka towards the Lower Zambezi Valley surrounded by steep escarpments, deep valleys full of trenches, streams to cross and lots of buffalo beans. Buffalo beans are vines that grow in most Zambian valleys. These beans look like a pea pod and when the vine is disturbed the pod releases very thin fiber hairs that can lead a person to scratch his skin off! All the Autoworld team members could describe how these beans feel after the race!

The Team

Our team members are all outdoor enthusiasts. We found every excuse to have a practice before this year’s race where we could get our adrenalin rushing before the official race!

Elephant charge-3 Team members from left to right before the start of this year’s 2013 Elephant charge: Johann (navigator), Aderlai (short distance runner), David (driver), Dave (long distance runner), Andy (short distance runner), Owen (long distance runner)

The Sponsorship

The whole purpose of the Elephant Charge is to raise money for wildlife conservation and education of future generations. Team Autoworld has supporters from all around the world and our suppliers are one of our biggest contributors! An arrangement was made with all of our suppliers that based on the monthly Autoworld purchases the relevant suppliers would offer discounts against these purchases. This incentive is a win win for both the suppliers and the Autoworld team and has been a total success. This has been the fund raising strategy for the last 3 years and has resulted in the following amounts being raised each year:

·       2011 - US$10,670 (K58,685) ·       2012 - US$25,368 (K139,524) ·       2013 - US$35,321 (K194,270)

The 2013 Elephant charge was the most successful year ever with a staggering US$172,000 (K946,000) raised by all the teams.

Elephant charge-5

Team Result

As much as we tried to get through the dust, wipe the sweat off and change the gears (DUST, SWEAT & GEARS) it was dust, sweat, gears and buffalo beans for us and no sign of completing the race!

We had our last 1.6km to complete the race and we heard a sound that we did not want to hear coming from the rear axle of the car! Unfortunately our diff gave in... All our dreams were shattered. A sad moment it was. We waited 12 months for the race, we worked tirelessly on the vehicle and the team was full of energy, but it was really not our day.

From the total number of 17 teams only 3 cars & 1 bike team completed the race. The course was a tough one. We learned a lot from the race. Despite not finishing the race we have learnt a lot about the capabilities of the car. Due to the lack of roads on the map we were forced to take the car over escarpments we would have probably avoided and this only gave the team the experience we need to be number 1 in the near future! We've also discovered how painful buffalo beans can be if you “charge” through them...“ouch”!

Elephant charge-2

The Bush Workshop

As an official sponsor to the Elephant charge 2013 Autoworld had the usual workshop set up to help any teams needing mechanical help. Unfortunately no “diffs” were in stock at the time of our mishap! The workshop consists of general tools and equipment such as a welding machine, generator, compressor, grinding and drilling machines to take care of just about any problem the teams may need help with. At the workshop we have a qualified welder, auto electrician and mechanic. Items such as lubricants, batteries, additives, and recovery equipment are on sale at the small stand.

Elephant charge-4

Onward and Upwards

Our company Chairman, Noble Findlay, lifted all hopes for Team Autoworld when he generously approved a new set of front & rear diffs for the team for 2014! We can start to dream of climbing hills again and working towards finishing the 2014 rally and this time, bringing a trophy home!

Special thanks to Noble Findlay for sponsoring the team and giving all the support needed to take part in the race, our suppliers for their generous donations to the fund and last but not least the team members along with their families.  There was never a dull moment of the race. Even when the diff blew, we still remained a team in a “diff-icult” situation!

Continuously Evolving

Today we're excited to introduce you to one of the Directors at Autoworld, Glenn Findlay.  He's sharing with us how for the past 22 years Autoworld has continued to evolve and endeavored to improve the service that we offer our customers.  On that note, meet Glenn...

Director - Glenn-1

For a company that has been in business for the past 22 years, we understand the importance of continuously evolving our business to ensure we meet our customers needs.  Today I'd like to share with you some of the things that we do at Autoworld to ensure that we continuously stay fresh and innovative.

Diversifying our Product Range

The core business of Autoworld has always been products such as Tyres, Tubes, Batteries, General Accessories, Service parts, Lubricants, Body, Suspension & Engine parts. Over the years Autoworld has diversified the range of products sold and this has now grown to a much wider range of products such as Garage Equipment, Generators, Air Compressors, 4x4 Offroad Equipment & Accessories as well as our rapidly growing Marine Division. Our Fitment Centres offer electronic wheel balancing and alignment, as well as engine servicing, suspension replacement, installation of car alarms, audio equipment and a number of general services.

Our Mission at Autoworld is to efficiently serve you our customer with a diverse range of quality products at competitive prices and with a service that keeps you coming back for more. This is something we have been working tirelessly to improve upon. Being in the replacement automotive parts industry does provide many challenges with regard to quality parts. This is the reason we are always looking to source the top brands available and offering the best quality parts on the market.  This applies to all of our product offering.

In House Training

Quality service is an issue that affects us all. We have all had a bad experience somewhere down the line and this can be very frustrating. I personally feel that service levels often tend to be overlooked by other priorities in an organization. Whilst we don’t claim to be perfect, we have over the course of this year introduced in-house training at Autoworld led by Davies Malembeka. Davies is a Business strategist, Leadership consultant and Training solutionist whose passion is to transform followers into leaders and help companies realize their dream.

The training that Davies offers is very diverse and covers a number of issues such as understanding the Company Mission and Core Values. Leadership skills, customer service, team building, work culture, attitude, communication as well as health and safety are all part of the training. This is carried out across the organization and applies to all departments. From the Management team through to the Accounts, Supervisors, Purchasing, Sales personal, Workshop Technicians and Cleaners, everyone is involved. This has proved to be a tremendous success and we have certainly seen a major improvement across all departments.

Product Knowledge Training

The other form of training we have is technical know how and understanding of the products we sell. This is done with the help of several of our suppliers who send technical experts to carry this out. Our salesmen/technicians involved with these particular products are then offered this training. We are continually appealing to more of our suppliers to come on board and be part of this exercise. This has proved to be very useful and will be an ongoing exercise.

Continuously Reviewing

Going forward, we will continually be looking at improving ourselves and our service offering to our customers. New product lines that we feel will be beneficial to the market will be made available in all of our stores, and likewise products that are not will be phased out. We are continually evolving to suit the market place around us. We greatly value all the input we get from you our customers and use this to the betterment of all.  So if you have anything you would like to share with us please feel free to comment below.

Keeping Zambia Moving

Finally, I would like to wholeheartedly thank you our customers for your continued support. This has got us to where we are today, and helps us continually improve in all of our endeavors. Please keep up the support and be part of the team that is “keeping Zambia moving”.

Glenn Findlay - Director

Getting the Right Tyre Pressure

Today we're hearing from one of our Managing Directors, Pierre Findlay, on the importance of ensuring your tyres have the right pressure as well as a quick and simple way of achieving this.

If you're pretty tyre savy you will most probably be able to look at your tyres and gauge using just your eyes whether your tyre pressure is right.  For most of us though, it's a really good idea to use a tyre pressure gauge to check your pressure (preferably when the tyres are cold) to see whether a trip to your nearest garage is necessary.  At all of our Autoworld branches we stock a wide range of inexpensive tyre pressure gauges.  These little gadgets can be stored in your car tool box or in the glove compartment.  They are incredibly easy to use and vitally important for ensuring you get the best performance and safety out of your tyres.

All tyre brands come with a recommended tyre PSI and you will find this information written on the actual tyre itself or within your vehicle's manual.  Running a tyre either below or above it's recommended tyre pressure can be both dangerous and inefficient leading to problems such as:

  • a reduction in the life span of the tyre

  • a reduction in the fuel economy of the vehicle

  • unnecessary blow outs

  • a reduction in the alignment of the tyre

At Autoworld we would recommend that you check your tyre pressure (including the spare tyre) at least once a month and having one of these tyre pressure gauges makes that task really simple.  If you're not up for doing the checking yourself you can always pop into one of our Autoworld Fitment Centres.  One of our technicians will be happy to check your tyre pressure and if necessary, fill it with air at no expense.

We like to keep Zambia moving and we want to keep it moving safely by encouraging you to take responsibility.

5400KM in 2 weeks with EEZI AWN Tents

EEZI AWN-1-web I am sure every camper knows the benefits of having a compact camping kit. The less you carry and the more organized you are, the less job you have to set the camp up and you can begin your holiday in the bush sooner! A couple of months ago I wrote about how I TJM equipped my Hilux for exploring the Zambian bush and this past month I’ve taken my exploring across the border with my family of 5 on a 5400km trip in 2 weeks through Botswana and Namibia.

In order to prepare for the trip, I spent the last few months converting my double cab Hilux to a full time camping “machine” with all of the essentials to be fully equipped to travel this journey. I had to think practically, saving all the space where I could so that the vehicle is light, yet at the same time has all that I needed to be comfortable. My biggest challenge was how I would accommodate my family of 5 in a tent that is both quick to set up and at the same time does not take up much space.  I still needed to have enough room to load my fridge and all the accessories needed for 3 kids and 2 adults for a period of 14 days on a 5400km journey… not an easy task!

I searched the Internet and found a brand of tents called EEZI AWN. The EEZI AWN brand has been in the business of tents for the last 29 years and exports their products all over the world. I decided to look at all the options available with EEZI AWN and found exactly what I needed.

EEZI AWN-2-web

This was a rooftop tent with drop sides that allows a top and bottom area, which had enough room at the top for 3 kids and a separate area to accommodate my wife and I. At the same time the tent is not very heavy and is made of 100% rip-stop canvas to withstand the cold conditions that sometimes go below zero in the Namibian desert during the winter months that we were traveling.

EEZI AWN-3-web

I also needed some shade cover for the spots where we would be camping in the desert country where there is no shade so this called for an Awning. I found the perfect sized Awning compatible to fit on my aluminium canopy so that we could have some shade cover when we needed it. When all of the equipment arrived at Autoworld and our workshop team installed it we had quite an audience around the car.  They thought I was crazy and planning a trip to Mars with all of the accessories on the car! Unfortunately I did not reach Mars! But the EEZI AWN equipment worked so well and it passed the test as my wife and kids did not complain of the cold and are all looking forward to my next destination so I am working on my maps again!

I realized that there must be many campers out there facing the same problems that I experienced. So in our quest to continually care for our customers and expand our outdoor product line at Autoworld we are delighted to announce that we are now the official dealers for EEZI AWN tents & Awnings in Zambia.  Our first shipment of EEZI AWN tents will be arriving in Zambia soon. We will shortly have the tents on display in our showrooms so all of you keen campers can come and have a look for yourselves and I’m confident that you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.

EEZI AWN-4-web Happy camping!

Mercury Backed by Autoworld

Autoworld website images low res-28 This month we're hearing from Gary & Dustin who have made time from their busy schedules to tell us about their roles at Autoworld being in charge of the Mercury Marine engine division. We asked them some questions and this is what they had to say:

Q. What is your role at Autoworld?

Gary: I'm the Technical Manager at Autoworld. I'm usually based at the Marine Department at Autoworld Downtown in Lusaka and also often go out into the field servicing units for the lodges.

Dustin: I'm a Marine Technician at Autoworld and my role is mainly based out in the field servicing units and helping our Mercury Marine clients' engines remain compliant with engine warranty.

Q. Why is there a need to have mobile marine technicians?

Dustin: Some of our clients are remotely based such as lodges, marine police and Department of Fisheries and their units are often operating at full capacity, which leaves them no time to bring their engines into the Marine Deparment in Lusaka for servicing. In order to comply with the Mercury warranty it is necessary for engines to be serviced at regular intervals and at Autoworld we want to go that extra mile to ensure that we are able to offer this reliable back up service. We're not just interested in selling engines, we want to ensure that our customers have the best possible after service in order to optimise their engine performance.

Q. What areas of the country do your cover?

Gary: Between 3 to 4 times a year we go to the Lower Zambezi, Kafue National Park, Siavonga, Livingstone to Kazungula and Lake Tanganyika. Length of trips vary between 2 days and 5 days depending on demand and travel time.

Dustin: We've also been know to do one off trips when a client has had an emergency. Most of these remote clients of ours are also service based so we understand the importance of their need to offer their clients an exceptional experience.

Q: How do you travel to the remote areas?

Dustin: We tow a fully loaded service boat filled with as many spares and tools as we can carry. We try to cover as many eventualities as we can so we're usually pretty loaded. When traveling to the Lower Zambezi for instance, we tow the boat as far as Chirundu and then launch and motor down the river to the different lodges.

Gary: Lake Tanganyika is the longest and toughest journey that we do which entails about 400km of dirt road and then a 3 hour boat ride from Mpulungu to the lodges.

photo

Q:  What sort of work do you do?

Dustin: On most visits to lodges we carry out a service on the engine ensuring that the unit is operating as it should be and also advise on care and maintenance.

Q:  What training have you both received to make you a qualified Mercury Marine Technician?

Gary: We have both traveled abroad several times to Dubai and Belgium where Mercury Marine carry out their technician training.  In between international training trips we receive emails from Mercury Marine with the latest developments and ways that dealers have overcome any issues with units to ensure that we constantly stay on top of our game.

Dustin: Occasionally we have representatives from Mercury Marine come to our premises to carry out training as well.

Q:  It sounds like a challenging role, do you have any tales to share?

Gary: Lots! On one occasion we were carrying out 3 installations at Chiawa Camp on the Lower Zambezi and were on our way back to Chirundu when we found one of our clients waiting for us in his boat in the middle of the river.  He wanted us to service one of his engines and was waiting to catch us on our way back to Lusaka.  It was getting dark by the time we finished and started heading back, so we took a short cut behind Kanyemba Island, but hit a sand bank.  About 50 meteres away was the biggest croc I've ever seen and he looked really hungry.  We had no time to waste so with the engine still running my colleague and I jumped out of the boat and managed to lift the boat in record time.  By the time we got back to the vehicle it was 8pm and dark.  Just as we docked the boat the fuel ran out.  That was a close call.

Q: Yikes, that WAS a close call!  Do you have any more?

Gary: We had a new client who had just bought an engine.  I woke up on Sunday morning to find 10 messages on my phone from the client.  His boat wouldn't start and he had clients arriving so he needed us to make an urgent trip to him in the Lower Zambezi.  By the time I got there it was 4pm and the boat was fixed by 6pm and it was pitch dark.  I had to get back to Lusaka that night because I had the keys to open the workshop the next morning.  The client offered us one of his guides to drive us back in the boat to our car.  It had taken us 2.5 hours boat ride to get to the camp and on our way back it took us 1.5 hours - top speed and in the pitch dark, zigzagging between sandbanks from the Zambian side of the river to the Zimbabwean river.  It was the scariest experience of my life!  In the end I sat on the floor of the boat facing backwards in the hope that would keep me safe if we hit a sandbank at top speed.  It was only when we arrived back at the vehicle that I realised we had been driven by one of the most successful poachers who was now a reformed game guide.  That was one journey to remember...

Autoworld website images low res-26

So there you have it. When we say we're committed to offering our clients the best possible after sales service on our Mercury engines you can believe us!

If you are interested in purchasing an engine or want to enquire about our Mercury Marine after sales service please contact Craig on craig@autoworld.co.zm.

14 Tips on How to Become a Successful Entrepreneur

In June 2011 I was invited to speak at the Kukula Cup Final about my experience as an entrepreneur in Zambia.  Planning for the talk made me reflect on the journey that I have been on since starting my first business, Impala Service Station in 1972, and the many lessons that I have learnt along the way.  The talk was so well received that I have decided to put together a list of 14 tips that I have implemented on my journey to success and highlight on each of them for the purpose of this article. Noble Findlay - Autoworld Chairman

14 Tips on How to Become a Successful Entrepreneur

  1. Choose a business that you will enjoy working in as it will be the place where you spend most of your time.
  2. Know that what you're doing is morally right.
  3. Once you've raised your capital, open up a bank account.  Banks will only lend you money if they can see your records and can follow your cashflow.
  4. The location of your business premises must be in the right place for the type of business you are running.
  5. Once you've established your business you've got to advertise and do marketing.
  6. Be innovative to ensure that you're always one step ahead of your competition.
  7. Maintain consistency in what you are doing to encourage consumer loyalty.
  8. Plough your profits back into the company to enable expansion and replacement costs.
  9. Maintain a healthy cashflow where your income is more than your expenditure.
  10. Pay suppliers promptly.
  11. Give good customer service.

Backtracking a little

Before I started Impala Service Station I didn't have much experience working for other people, however the little work that I did do has helped me so much in running my own business.  In hindsight I would always advise to gain as much experience as you can working for other people because it will teach you so much about business and will enable you to learn about the mistakes first without them affecting your own bottom line.

After finishing school I started working for Lusaka City Council in the buying and stores offices where I learnt about custom clearing and stock control.  The Lusaka City Council sponsored me to go to the UK to do a course in business management which specialised in purchasing, marketing, economics and finance and what I learnt there helped me tremendously when I eventually started my own business.

How I Implemented the 14 Tips

1.  Choose a business that you will enjoy working in as it will be the place where you spend most of your time. I was interested in cars so I knew that I'd be happy running a business dealing with spare parts and accessories.  When I later opened Autoworld and expanded this business I ventured into selling boats and engines because boating is my hobby so going to work has been like doing my favourite sport.

2.  Know that what you're doing is morally right. I'll give you an example of determination.  When I was studying in England I had a part-time job selling encyclopedias door to door.  Each sales person was given targets. If we sold 3 sets of encyclopedias each evening we would be given a £50 bonus on top of our pay.  I was usually the only one to get that bonus because I applied the sales language and method of selling that I was taught which was designed in such a way to make the person agree to the sale and it worked every time.  We were even taught to hide certain information such as the bit at the bottom of the form which enabled the customer to cancel the order up to 48 hours later because the transaction was made in their own home.  If we made customers aware of that option it would give them choice which would ultimately lead to doubt and this would not be good for a guaranteed sale.  So we were taught to fold this bottom section of the form so that the customer never saw it when they filled out the sales form.  The moment I realised that I was selling these encyclopedias to people that didn't need them and couldn't actually afford them I couldn't sell anymore.  So you've got to be happy with what you're doing and know that you're doing the right thing selling what you do.  When I opened Impala selling petrol and spare parts I knew that this was something people needed and that felt right.

3.  Once you've raised your capital, open up a bank account.  Banks will only lend you money if they can see your records and can follow your cashflow.

The funny thing with banks is that before they lend you money you have to prove to them that you don't need their money.  In my case I didn't have the money when I started my business so my mother loaned me K1,000 back in 1972 and with that money I opened a bank account. Within 3 days of opening the account I had an overdraft!

4.  The location of your business premises must be in the right place for the type of business you are running. Before opening Impala Service Station I applied to Caltex for a petrol station and they offered me the one on the Kabwe Road heading out of Lusaka.  It was the perfect location to capture motorists entering and leaving the city as well as coming into town to do their business around the Cairo Road area.

5.  Once you've established your business you've got to advertise and do marketing. One of the first marketing campaigns that I initiated was leafleting cars which was a suggestion from Caltex at the time.  I paid people to go out and put a leaflet with a picture of a car with 4 tyres on it.  After inspecting the car they would mark on the leaflet which tyre needed replacing.  The blurb on the leaflet was something along the lines of "We've taken the liberty of inspecting your tyres and we've indicated which tyre needs replacing.  We currently have tyres in stock at Impala Service Station and we'd be happy to fit them for you".  It worked!  After this we tried a few raffles where customers who bought a certain amount of fuel or products in the shop would be entered for a free raffle with the first prize being a brand new car.  Again this worked too. Another thing that I have found is people often think that in order for a business to be successful you have to sell a high yielding profit item, however what I've found is that this is not always the case.  I found offering a 'carrot' like cigarettes, cool drinks or a vending machine in the spares shop encouraged customers to stop and buy their fuel at Impala.  While they were there, they ended up seeing other products which they then went on to purchase as well.  So you've got to make the whole customer experience something that makes them want to come back again and again.

6.  Apply innovation to ensure that you're always one step ahead of your competition. Before I opened Impala I was helping to run a family business selling beer in Emmasdale.  I compared the profit of a litre of beer sold to a litre of fuel that I would be able to sell at the filling station.  The profit was higher for a litre of beer sold, however fuel took the lead with greater volume at less profit.  I also discovered that the profit in running a petrol station doesn't come from the amount of fuel sold, but rather the amount of engine oil sold.  When I started Impala you couldn't buy engine oil in smaller containers as it only came in big drums. So I went to the compounds and bought used small containers of cooking oil, cleaned them out and decanted the oil from the drums into the containers.  This way I was able to offer oil to my customers to buy and also offer the service of an oil top up to customers filling up with fuel.  Within a short space of time I had so many women bringing me hundreds of containers on a daily basis from the compounds.

7.  Maintain consistency in what you are doing to encourage consumer loyalty. When I opened Impala I maintained consistency by setting opening hours and ensuring my customers knew these hours.  I maintained sufficient stock levels because I knew that a disappointed customers will always go to my competition and I would then run the risk of loosing that customer especially if my competitor was offering a better service. I ensured that I always had oil and air. I also offered a 24 hour tyre mending service which we offered for at least 40 years before having to close it recently due to feasibility.

8.  Ploug your profits back into the company to enable expansion and replacement costs. I started Impala with 8 employees and I now have 300 employees between 13 branches nationwide.  I did this by never using my profit and constantly putting it back into the business - expanding my product and service range as well as opening new branches.

9.  Maintain a healthy cashflow where your income is more than your expenditure. Your cashflow is what determines whether or not you will go bankrupt.  You've got to be thrifty in how you run your business and buy what you need, not what you want.  This means only buying what you can afford.

10.  Pay suppliers promptly. I've always adhered to payment terms and this has enabled me to continue a good relationship of trust with all of my suppliers.  What you want is a good reputation and respect because when you give someone respect they will also respect you.

11.  Give good customer service. Without your customer you have no business so it is vitally important to put time and effort into ensuring that they are treated well.  Caltex offered staff training which involved things such as greeting a customer nicely and thanking them at the end while asking them to call again. When a car came to fill up with petrol my staff would be trained to ask the customer if they wanted their windscreen cleaned and tyre pressure checked. I bought my own compressor to offer tyre pressure. I wanted my customers to leave with a positive experience from the visit to Impala so that they would want to come back again.

12.  After identifying reliable customers, offer credit facilities to enable expansion of your business. I looked out for regular buyers and got to know what sort of a business they were running and if it was a reputable organisaiton I offered these customers credit facilities.  It meant that I got to sell more sooner and this all contributed to me being able to expand Impala into Autoworld.

13.  The people you employ are an important factor in your success so make sure they are experienced, dedicated and offer training facilities. I have always looked for employees that are keen to share in my vision for my business.  Training is essential to ensure that everyone is operating on the same page and equipped with the right skills for the role.

14.  Set a goal of what you want - aim high and aim for the best. When I first started Impala I could see the potential for the business if I managed to implement a successful business model.  I was able to do this at Impala and this led me to opening my first Autoworld branch.  I  remember, on the day of the official opening of the branch, walking my mother around who had come to cut the ribbon and telling her my plans for expanding the premises and my goal of having a branch in every provincial centre.
